Is Windows Phone 7 REALLY going to change your life?

Express your opinions by taking the poll to the right of this post :)

I  recently saw this advertisement on TV for the new Windows Phone devices. It claims to "get you back to life" by keeping you from constantly looking at your phone. I don't think that this correctly describes how WP7 can help anyone achieve this.

Yes, the phone has tiles that display the number of messages and emails you have in your inboxes that are unread, but it does not quickly tell you who sent the message or reveal any of the content. Microsoft is implying that all WP7 users only want to know how many people are trying to contact them at a certain point in time, but not what they want to say. Microsoft made a bad move here by pushing the point that their new mobile operating system is intended to demote the information passed on by your friends, family or business partners.

If someone were to ask me how WP7 and iOS were different, I frankly couldn't. Apple's mobile operating system (currently iOS 4.1) has notifications as well, with the number of unread messages displayed in a red circle on the top right corner of the application button.

Let's see how this plays out for Microsoft. My bet's that it will fail - terribly.

  2. They've come a long way, but when you consider the momentum of Apple in the phone industry right now... I don't think Windows has the edge yet.

  3. Much better commercial than the others, this one actually explains how it gets you in out, and back into life.

  5. To be honest, I expect not much more from this phone over any other windows phone. Windows mobile always was (and probably will be) very, very shitty.
